To be a Top 1000 IMDb Voter:

  1. Vote for at least 10,000 different entries on IMDb
  2. The trick is to vote not just on Movies and TV series but also on individual episodes.
  3. This is not something I personally do, but it will be what you have to do to become a Top 1000 IMDb voter.
  4. Please do not rate titles with a quick fake rating as IMDb has a system in place to recognize bots and fake ratings. Also, no you cannot just get away with rating titles the same as their IMDb rating; its both stupid and unethical if you are a true cinema lover.

To check if you are a Top 1000 IMDb voter or NOT:
  1. Find a movie or TV episode on IMDb with very few ratings:
    Example: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0406535
  2. Now next to the rating click the from "X USERS" i.e.:
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0406535/rat ... _=tt_ov_rt
  3. Now scroll down to the ratings breakdown you will see this movie's ratings from IMDB's top 1000 voters; Click on that i.e.:
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0406535/ratings-top_1000
  4. Now you rate this movie with a rating that none of the other IMDB top 1000 voters have rated it. Example: Vote '3' for this movie.
  5. Now wait 48 hours and return to the Top 1000 voters vote breakdown i.e.:
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0406535/ratings-top_1000
  6. If you are a top 1000 voter you will see an additional vote for rating "3".
  7. If you dont see a vote added here, it means you are not a top IMDb voter yet.
  8. Lastly, please remove the false rating you added for testing.

There are many TV Show lists on the internet, but they are created according to the preference and taste of the list creator and not YOU, the people.

IMDb doesn't have a Top 250 Indian TV shows list, other lists that do exist have entries that are not made in Hindi or are badly-dubbed in Hindi.

Considering the fact that nearly two-third of India can "understand" Hindi, here is a much-needed list of the Top 350 Hindi TV shows ever made compiled using the Weighted Ratings of all Hindi TV shows ever made:

Notes -
  1. TV shows are not listed in descending order of their Ratings, you will have to sort it manually.
  2. The Top Rated TV shows list also includes Web documentaries and Mini-series as well.
  3. To be included on the list, the TV show must receive a minimum number of votes and rating.
  4. Learn more about how list ranking is determined here.

There are many movie lists on the internet, but they are created according to the preference and taste of the list creator and not YOU, the people.

IMDb has a Top 250 Indian Movies list, but nearly 25% of that list contains movies that do exist have entries that are not made in Hindi or are badly-dubbed in Hindi.

Considering the fact that nearly two-third of India can "understand" Hindi, here is a much-needed list of the Top 1000 Hindi Movies ever made compiled using the Weighted Ratings of all Bollywood Movies.

Notes -
  1. Movies are listed in descending order of their Ratings.
  2. The Top Rated Movie list only includes theatrical features and TV movies/documentaries.
  3. To be included on the list, a movie must receive a minimum number of votes and rating.

Rating Distribution -
  1. Movies rated between 9.5-10 = 1
  2. Movies rated between 9.0-9.5 =8
  3. Movies rated between 8.5-9.0 =80
  4. Movies rated between 8.0-8.5 =500
  5. Movies rated between 7.5-8.0 =960

Therefore,
You are left with a total of at least 1550 "must watch" movies to watch in your lifetime.
If you watch 1 movie every weekend, it will take you 30 years to watch all of these movies.
If you watch 1 movie every weekday, it will take you 6 years to watch all of these movies.
If you watch 6 movies everyday (up to 12hours/day), it will take you 310 days (85% of the whole year) to watch all of these movies.

Note -
  1. Only movies with at least 10,000 votes and rated between 7.5 and 10.0 have been considered for this list, thus, an effective number is attained which cancels out most of the movies overrated due to voting by a limited geographical/lingual/cultural/gender demographics.
  2. Of all the feature films with a minimum vote count of 10,000, ~25% of them have a rating of 7.5 and above, so this criterion is nearly perfect for someone who believes that nearly 25% of all feature films are "enjoyable".
  3. If you believe that only ~10% of all feature films are "enjoyable", then, you shall only consider 600 movies as a "must watch", which have at least 10,000 votes and are rated between 8.0 and 10.0.
  4. If you believe that only ~1% of all feature films are "enjoyable", then, you shall only consider 60 movies as a "must watch", which have at least 10,000 votes and are rated between 8.6 and 10.0.

As responsibilities increase, we all are left with lesser and lesser time for Entertainment as seen in the Time Distribution for Working People article. Here's a breakdown of IMDb ratings which will help you decide which movies/tv shows/games you should actually watch depending on how much flexibility you can allow in your time investment.

IMDb RATING GUIDELINES TO FOLLOW-

  1. Bottom Tier (Bad Rating)-
    • Movies rated < 6.5
    • TV Shows rated < 7.0
    • Games rated < 7.0

The average of the min and max rating that can be given to any movie/tv show/game is: (1+10)/2=5.5. Its very very unlikely that you would enjoy movies/tv shows/games in these rating windows because their content is too cliched/monotonous/unprofessional and the experience is probably gonna be a waste of time (This is true 99% of the times as there are always personal exceptions to any rule).

  2. Middle Tier (OK Rating)-
    • Movies rated between 6.5 - 7.9
    • TV Shows rated between 7.0 - 8.4
    • Games rated between 7.0 - 8.4

This is the most tricky rating gap for movie/tv shows/games and qualifies (mostly) as a way of killing time. Subjectively, you may enjoy ~25% of the of all the movie/tv shows/games within these rating windows, if the the movie/tv show is strictly:
    1. of the genre you love to watch
    2. based on an issue/topic you are interested in
    3. involves an artist you admire watching
    4. related to your demographic of race/culture/gender

  3. Top Tier (Good Rating)-
    • Movies rated 8.0+
    • TV Shows rated 8.5+
    • Games rated 8.5+
The media in these rating windows is great in many ways and qualifies as a way to Irrespective of whether you like it or not, every movie/tv show/game in this rating window is actually good. You may not enjoy 10% of these movies/tv shows/games, but your negative opinion about them is subjective to you and probably due to something you may inherently hate/despise/disrespect, shown in the movie/tv show/game.

Notes -
  1. Remember to click on the "number of votes" link, located under the IMDb rating of the media, to see a detailed info on the rating distribution for the Movie by different age groups, as the rating windows used in this article are age specific.
  2. Sometimes you will need to personally adjust the ratings for movies/tv shows/games whose major voting demographic is overly biased negatively/positively towards the theme of the movie/tv show/game.
  3. For movies/tv shows/games from the 20th century (released before the year 2000), your enjoyment is subjective to the level of your development as a connoisseur/pundit of
    movies/tv shows/games.
  4. The younger demographic tends to overrate movies/tv shows/games due to their relative inexperience in life, so if you find yourself in lack of good content, adjust your chosen rating window(s) by a unit of 0.5 to be able to discover more content.
  5. It takes a few months for a newly released (movie/tv show/game)'s rating to stabilize, so wait till the hyped-inflated rating settles down to its base value.
  6. Your personal preferences for each type of media, depend on how much time you are willing to invest in experimenting with that type of media, Example: Personally, you may have a lower rating cut off to consider a movie "Top Tier" because you inherently enjoy gaming.

The Internet Movie Database (abbreviated IMDb) was launched in 1990 by professional computer programmer Col Needham. It is now a commercial website owned by Amazon.com.

If you want to know information related to films, television programs and video games, (also including cast, production crew, fictional characters, biographies, plot summaries, trivia and reviews), you can use this free online database that is available to everyone. You can use the search bar to try and find what you are looking for.

The website allows visitors to share information about the movies, actors, directors and other insights they may have about films.

Users can rate any film on a scale of 1 to 10, and the totals are converted into a weighted mean-rating that is displayed beside each title, with online filters employed to deter ballot-stuffing. IMDb gives a good opinion of the general public since it has acquired a huge number of users over time.

The weighted arithmetic mean is similar to an ordinary arithmetic mean (the most common type of average), except that instead of each of the data points contributing equally to the final average, some data points contribute more than others.

Users can create and maintain watchlists for the media they want to see later on. Additonally, users can make custom lists, listing various media as per their own preferences; these lists can then be made private or public for future references. Making IMDb is one of the best featues of the website as it has a good interface and a more professional understanding of database queries.
