Notes -
  1. Electronic Vehicle Control Module (EVCM) (made by Zytek) provides the interface between the powertrain and the rest of the vehicle.
  2. EVCM integrates powertrain control, by including torque arbitration, temperature control and voltage management to allow better decision making using algorithms.
  3. Optimises the driver’s torque request based on a broad range of parameters including battery charge and temperature and the grip available at the tyres.
  4. Provides more with less, improving both the driving experience and the range while reducing the size, weight and cost of the power electronics and battery pack
  5. Tested under the strict Euro-NCAP safety standards under Gordon Murray’s approval, with results that he claims are “first-class.”
  6. Survived a EuroNCAP 50kph side impact mobile deformable barrier test with "virtually zero cabin intrusion"
  7. World's Most Efficient Electric Car,
    Smart EV/ED uses 29% more energy/km,
Mitsubishi iMiev uses 36% more energy/km,
    Mini-E
    uses 86% more energy/km.

Techniques Used/Notes -

  1. Highly Tuned FF1 EcoBoost® "Baby" Engine (3 Years Consecutive International Engine of The Year 2012,2013,2014) with DOHC, Direct Injection (@ up to 200bar) and Variable Valve Timing.
  2. A cylinder head with an integrated and cooled exhaust manifold that lowers exhaust temperatures for optimizing the fuel-to-air ratio.
  3. An innovative flywheel and front pulley design deliver improved refinement compared with traditional three-cylinder engine designs.
  4. Engine friction is reduced by specially coated pistons, low-tension piston rings, low-friction crank seals and a cam-belt-in-oil design.
  5. A variable-displacement oil pump tailors lubrication to demand and optimizes oil pressure for improved fuel efficiency.
  6. Max revs increased to 7,500rpm by removing the heavy dual-mass flywheel (fitted to improve refinement and reduce gear rattle) and replace it with a lightweight steel version. It was dry-sumped.
  7. The engine block is cast iron instead of aluminum for up to 50% faster warm-up, at the expense of additional weight.
  8. Due to natural vibrations of a 3-cylinder design, the flywheel as with any other engine of similar configuration has been weighted properly to ensure smooth running, without the use of energy sapping balance shafts.
  9. Multiple fuel injections (namely 3), occur in a single combustion cycle.
  10. The engine also features an internal timing belt, bathed in the engine oil, for long life and greater efficiency and reduced noise.
  11. The exhaust manifold is cast into the cylinder head, reducing warm-up times and therefore further aiding efficiency. All this is packaged in an engine block the size of an A4 sheet of paper.
  12. This car is a Formula Ford racer converted for road use that includes the addition of registration plates, wheel covers, front and rear lights, revised wing mirrors, road-legal tires. and a horn.
