Finding a job is stressful, the sometimes long and arduous process can make you feel like you are not worth someone's time/respect.

Over the course of the last 3 years, I have failed over a 3000 times while succeeding only 15 times to get an interview or clear one. I have been engineering and refining search techniques to find and filter jobs using the internet for a long time now. As a search engine optimization and data research enthusiast, I have loved the challenge of being able to land an interview via online applications.

People have been telling me that getting a job nowadays is about "LUCK", but I do not believe in that word. To me, "luck" is a concept that modest people use to define their success while the lazier ones use the same word to define others' success upon it. I have seen qualified people complain about others getting jobs that they were unqualified for, well guess what, it's not just your skills that count towards your candidacy for a position, it's also your spirit and attitude to actually pursue opportunities hard enough to actually make the effort to apply for them!

Professional / Moral / Ethical points to remember before you apply for any (more) jobs!

  1. Please remember, lying on your resume or your online profile about your skills and/or experience is admittedly a shortcut to landing interviews via online applications, but it doesn't make you clear your interview.
  2. Also if you do clear your interview, your fake skills and/or experience won't let you retain your job for longer than a month.
  3. If you are able to stay at your newfound company for any longer than that then maybe you deserve to be in a field of work that could use your skill of marketing/exaggerating/lying/selling or your company just sucks!
  4. Think of making this process efficient for everyone by not wasting a recruiter's time on reading your resume for a position you don't qualify for and also not wasting the effort that a candidate makes in applying for that very job that he/she actually qualifies for because every second wasted on an unqualified profile is another second less invested in a qualified profile.
  5. The interview probabilities given below are only applicable if you apply for the appropriate positions that you are qualified for, these numbers are not repeatable if you apply for positions blindly (like I have already tried and failed).

Here are examples of the most useful search techniques that will help you find and filter jobs well enough to get interviewed for them in the 21st century using the internet:

  1. Indeed (Interview Probability: 10%)
Please note that these links are for a more advanced (but FREE) version of Indeed and NOT the normal version of Indeed that you (may) have already registered for!

    a)
The most simple, effective and to the point job application platform I have seen.
    b) How do I know it's good? Because it works! I have landed almost 10 interviews and/or interactive follow up emails after applying for jobs via this platform.
    c) Indeed has a host of job opportunities available for candidates from all spheres of life, from janitors to data scientists, it's got it all.
    d) This platform allows for you to filter out words that you would not want in the job description of the jobs you believe you qualify for, here are a few useful examples that would be applicable to most candidates reading this article:

    Example 1:
    Fresh graduates
don't have any actual work experience other than a few internships or no internships at all in some cases. So, it's logical to say that candidates would not want their job descriptions to include words like
"x-y years of experience required / z year minimum experience needed / senior engineer / sr. engineer",
so your search term, if you are an engineer would be: "engineer -year -years -senior -sr."

    Example 2:
Most of us looking for jobs online (and not on campus or in person) are
international applicants, so the words you wouldn't want in your job descriptions are
"citizenship needed / U.S. citizens only / US person / sponsorship not provided / green card / permanent residents / security clearance"
So, if you are an international engineering candidate your search term would be:
"engineer -citizenship -citizen -U.S. - clearance -sponsorship -sponsor -resident -"green card" -citizens"

    Example 3:
    I am a mechanical engineer
by trade and skill, I don't know much about advanced electronics or how to actually program an operating system, so most job listing with these words would be positions I am not fully qualified for. The words I wouldn't want in my job search are "electronic / electronics / electrical / firmware / programming / coding"
So, if you are a mechanical engineering candidate your search term would be:
"mechanical engineer -electronic -electronics -electrical -firmware -programming -coding""

    Bonus Tip:

If you have been reading this article with concentration, you deserve this bonus tip!
Install the Indeed app on your phone and in your phone app, go in your search filters, select the "Apply from phone" option so as to only show jobs that will allow you to apply for them while staying within the Indeed app without taking you to an external company website to make an account there.

  2. LinkedIn (Interview Probability: 5%)
    a) This website is infamous for the "generic wisdom" spam that some people mostly from the domains of Sales / Retail / HR / Marketing create. People who are obsessively career oriented, use LinkedIn as a replacement for Facebook.
    b) However, if you are accurate+genuine in your thought, direction, motive, point/person of contact and are playing your cards right, you can land a telephonic interview and or a conversation over a cup of coffee.
    c) How do I know this works? Because this was how I landed one of my internships.
    d) It is recommended that you search for and connect with professional people and groups on LinkedIn that relate to your body of work.
    e) You can use the same search filters/techniques as explained above for Indeed on the LinkedIn Job search platform.

  3. CareerBuilder (Interview Probability: 3%)
    a) If you have lost most of your hope and are just about to give up on your job search, I suggest using this website to literally flood your resume/profile into recruiting/staffing companies.
    b) Most of the people contacting you will be unprofessional in their communication or completely wrong about the positions they are trying to hire you for but sometimes a recruiter is good and professional enough to make the effort to search for a position that matches your specific profile.
    c) Remember, bad recruiters (apples) only exist because you keep responding to (eating) them.

    WHY
am I the author am not posting direct quality links for the positions that you can apply for?
BECAUSE I believe in only giving people what they deserve. If I spoonfed you what you want, it is unfair to the people actually making the efforts to search for jobs. The people who really want a job will care enough to process the information given in this article to yield a useful result. I only wrote this article because I have observed job seekers being helpless and this article can serve as a stepping stone for you to improve the quality of your job search thus also increasing the output of the work you put in.

REMEMBER, your search filter is specific to your skills and personality, my own search filter is 300 characters long and it gives me an output of 75% useful positions that I am actually qualified for.

LASTLY, please do not think you are not smart enough to land a job. The smart part of searching for a job online is already covered in this article, what's left is your persistence to keep working hard in the smart direction.
