Getting a credit card is a significant step in your financial journey.
Before applying, it's crucial to understand how credit cards work and what qualifications you'll need.

How Credit Cards Work

A credit card is a financial tool that allows you to borrow money from a lender (typically a bank or financial services company) to make purchases. This can be a physical card or stored virtually in a digital wallet.

  • Borrowing Money: When you use a credit card, you're essentially borrowing money from the issuer.
  • Repayment: You are required to pay back at least a minimum amount of what you borrowed each month.
  • Interest (APR): Any money you don't pay back by the due date will accrue interest over time, based on the card's Annual Percentage Rate (APR).
  • Credit Limit: Lenders set a credit limit, which is the maximum amount you can charge to the account. Your available credit decreases as you use the card and increases as you pay down your balance.
  • Building Credit: Responsible credit card use, including timely payments, is an excellent way to build a positive credit score. A good credit score is vital for securing loans for major purchases like a car or a home mortgage in the future.

What You'll Need to Apply for a Credit Card

To apply for a credit card, you'll generally need to meet specific requirements and provide certain information.

General Requirements:

  • Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
  • Residency: You typically need to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Income: A source of income is usually required to demonstrate your ability to make payments.
    • Applicants 21 or Older: You can list any income to which you have access, including that of a spouse or partner.
    • Applicants Under 21: You must show proof of sufficient independent income to manage payments.

Identification and Financial Information:

When you're ready to apply for a specific card, have the following information readily available:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
  • Country of citizenship
  • Contact information (address, phone, email)
  • Employment status
  • Annual income (including non-taxable income like Social Security or disability income)
  • Housing expenses (e.g., mortgage or rental payments)
  • Bank account information

Credit History:

  • Necessity: For most credit cards, a credit history is required. This demonstrates your past borrowing and repayment behavior.
  • For Newcomers: If you're new to credit and don't have a credit history, there are specific cards designed for building credit from scratch. These can be used to establish a positive payment history, allowing you to qualify for better cards later.
  • Foreign Credit History: If you're a non-U.S. citizen with a positive credit history in your country of origin, it generally cannot be directly transferred to the United States. You'll typically need to build a new credit history here.

Understanding Your Credit Score

Your credit score is a numerical representation (typically ranging from 300 to 850) that lenders use to assess your creditworthiness.1 A higher score indicates lower risk to lenders, increasing your chances of approval and qualifying for favorable interest rates.

Factors Influencing Your Credit Score:

While the exact algorithms vary by scoring model (e.g., FICO, VantageScore), common factors include:

  • Payment History: Your track record of making on-time payments is the most significant factor.
  • Amounts Owed (Credit Utilization): The amount of credit you're using compared to your total available credit. Keeping this low (ideally under 30%) is beneficial.
  • Length of Credit History: The longer your accounts have been open and in good standing, the better.
  • New Credit: Applying for too much new credit in a short period can temporarily lower your score.
  • Credit Mix: Having a healthy mix of different credit types (e.g., credit cards, installment loans like car loans or mortgages) can be positive.

Managing Your Credit Score:

  • Check Your Report Annually: Regularly check your credit report (at least once a year) for accuracy. This is a "soft inquiry" and will not affect your score. You can get free copies from AnnualCreditReport.com.
  • Improve Your Score: If your score is low, focus on making all payments on time, keeping credit utilization low, and addressing any negative items on your report. It takes consistent positive activity to build or improve a score.
  • Limit Hard Inquiries: "Hard inquiries" occur when you apply for new credit. These can slightly lower your score for a short period. Only apply for credit when genuinely needed.
  • Building Positive History: To build good credit, you'll need to demonstrate positive payment history over time by making regular purchases and consistently paying off your balance on time every month.
  • FICO Score Creation: It typically takes about six months of credit activity for a FICO credit score (the most commonly used score by lenders) to be generated. Once you have a FICO score, you'll likely find a wider variety of credit cards available to you.

Credit Card Networks

Credit card networks are the companies that process transactions between the merchant and the bank. The four major networks in the United States are:

  • American Express: Operates one of the world's largest global payment networks and also issues its own cards.
  • Discover: The Discover Global Network operates in over 200 countries and territories and also issues its own cards.
  • Mastercard: Operates in more than 210 countries and territories, making Mastercard credit cards widely accepted globally. Does not issue its own cards; partners with banks.
  • Visa: Accepted in over 200 countries and territories, with billions of Visa cards in use worldwide. Does not issue its own cards; partners with banks.

While Visa and Mastercard have historically been the most widely accepted, American Express and Discover are continuously expanding their global presence. Note that American Express and Discover are unique among these four in that they both operate the network and issue their own cards, unlike Visa and Mastercard which partner with other banks to issue cards.

Preapproval: What It Means

"Preapproval" means a lender has conducted a "soft inquiry" on your credit report. Based on this, they've determined you meet some of their initial criteria.

  • Benefits of Preapproval Offers:
    • No Impact on Credit Score: Soft inquiries do not affect your credit score.
    • Higher Approval Odds: You're more likely to be approved if you formally apply, assuming your financial situation hasn't changed.
    • Compare Offers: Allows you to compare different card offers before committing to an application.
  • Formal Application: To get the card, you still need to complete a formal application. This will trigger a "hard inquiry" on your credit report, which can temporarily affect your score.

Types of Credit Cards

Choosing the right credit card depends on your lifestyle, financial goals, and spending habits. Here are the four most common types:

  • Rewards Cards:
    • Purpose: Earn points, miles, or other rewards on qualifying purchases.
    • Redemption: Rewards can be redeemed for gift cards, cash back, travel, merchandise, and more.
    • Features: Often come with annual fees and potentially higher APRs.
  • Cashback Cards:
    • Purpose: Earn a percentage of your spending back as cash.
    • Features: May also have higher APRs. Some have annual fees, while many popular ones do not.
  • Low-Rate Cards:
    • Purpose: Prioritize a low Annual Percentage Rate (APR).
    • Features: Typically have no annual fees and generally do not offer rewards or cash back. Ideal if you anticipate carrying a balance.
  • Secured Cards:
    • Purpose: Designed for individuals with no credit history or poor credit to build or rebuild credit.
    • How it Works: Requires a security deposit with the lender, which typically becomes your credit limit.
    • Features: Usually have tighter spending limits and generally do not earn rewards or cash back. The deposit minimizes risk for the issuer.

Build Credit using your 1st card (needs ITIN)

    Secured cards:
If you have a Social Security number but a thin/bad credit file, you may need to start building your U.S. credit history by applying for a secured credit card. You provide a deposit, usually $200 or more, that the issuer holds in case you don't pay your bill. In most cases, your deposit becomes your credit limit — put down a $500 deposit, for example, and your credit limit is $500. Many secured card issuers submit your activity and payment history to the major credit bureaus, so this can be a good way to build a solid credit history.
